You can’t wait to bring your first ferret home, right? They are so cute and cuddly that you can’t stop looking at them. But before you bring your ferret at home, there are few things that you need to check, to ensure that they are safe once they are in your home. Since most of us are buying kit (baby ferrets), make sure that the litter box has a very low entrance that can easily be accessed by the kits. Food and water container has been filled and lastly, their sleep sacks or hammocks are available for them.

One of the main concerns when you first brought your kits at home is their health. Considering that they have travelled a long way just to reach your local pet shop. They have been exposed to a lot of other animals and have probably acquired infections and parasites along the way and were also given the wrong food. Stress increases their vulnerability so bringing them to the veterinarian is very important to know the condition and maybe ask some tips if it is your first time owning a ferret.

Baby kits need a lot of sleep for them to grow healthy. Exposing them to the whole neighborhood and handle him/ her will not help, instead they become stressed. Let them settle in a cool dark place for them to sleep. Once they get all the energy they need for play, they will excitedly play for an hour or so and then get back to their cozy sleep sack or hammock to sleep. Just give them time to sleep since in a few weeks time they will burn you out since they have all the energy to play.

When it comes to health, the first concern in your ferrets is their respiratory problem. Kits that has been travelled just to reach your local pet shop can sometimes get colds. They sneeze a lot because of the stress. In order to relive his/ her sneezing, you have to clean his/her nose so it can breathe and eat. Soften the kits food for them to chew properly and giving him a cool quite place to sleep can help the kit get back on their feet. But of the kit has a runny nose with white and yellow discharge, bring the kit to the veterinarian and have him/her check for infections.

Kits should have a veterinary check up at 9 weeks old. Though distemper vaccination is given to them before leaving the breeding farm, it will not protect the kit after he/ she reaches 9 weeks old. To protect him from any deadly diseases, minimize its contact with strangers, who can sometimes carry the virus into their clothing. Avoid bringing the kit of the house especially when there are dogs, even if they are in leash.

Having a dog or a cat with fleas, have them treated before bringing a ferret at home. Your ferret too can surely have fleas. Keeping the kits away from the sleeping areas of cats and dogs is advisable since it is where the young fleas wait for a new host. Kits with fleas can cause anemia.
